A very good friend of mine has just celebrated his 70th birthday.

He’s incredibly successful in all dimensions (health, wife, family, friends, financial), which makes him one of those difficult people to buy a present for, so I googled “1954 achievements” and was reminded that this is when Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile record in 3.59.4 mins. This led me to find a signed first edition of Bannister’s book “First Four Minutes” which now sits in my friend’s study.

The search also led me to discover that the current record for the mile is 3.43.13 mins held by Hicham El Guerrouj since 1999 – it hasn’t been beaten outdoors in 25 years.

It’s not the only long standing record:

Men
1000m 1999
1500m 1998
3000m 1996
Triple Jump 1995
High Jump 1993
Long Jump 1991

Many Women’s records go back even further:
100m 1988
200m 1988
Long Jump 1988
Shot Putt 1987
400m 1985
800m 1985

Could this suggest that humanity has physically peaked, or is close to it? And if so, what’s the point of pursuing unobtainable records?
