The more you fail, the more you succeed

Bill Gates’ first business failed. That’s right, one of the richest people in the world fell at the first hurdle when ‘Traf-O-Data’ (a device to read tapes and process data) failed so badly it didn’t even work on a pitch when Gates and business partner Paul Allen tried to sell it. Interestingly Gates didn’t mention this (although he’s never hidden it) when recently asked about the mistakes he’s made. The one that really gets to him is losing out to Google who bought Android and went on to destroy Microsoft’s ‘Windows Phone’.

Despite accumulating wealth beyond most people’s imagination, Gates has had to overcome many setbacks and failures – indeed he credits them with providing the impetus to pursue new projects and ventures.

As an aside, Gates reads 50 books a year and publishes summaries on his personal blog

One he recommends for 2020 that I’ve just ordered is “Growth” by Vaclav Smil.
