Bookcase.
It’s a very exciting day.
My new circular bookcase contraption has arrived, which when assembled will enable me to access 245 books without leaving my desk.
Immediately my “important shelf” is 3X the size it was before, and at the same time I can return books from my bedroom, sitting room, dining room – make that every room in the house!
But in conversation with a friend this morning, when I shared my delight at the day ahead, she asked if I was putting it together myself… “Not a chance” I replied, “I wouldn’t know where to start!”
This led to an interesting conversation about skill sets.
My ignorance of all things DIY is almost complete. At a push I can now change the battery in a smoke detector, (although learning how to do so resulted in a replacement smoke detector being ordered as well as a new battery.)
But I can do some things; writing for example.
I’ve realised that it’s absolutely fine, indeed more than that it’s important, to recognise and acknowledge what you can’t do well, and what you can.
I can plan a holiday brilliantly – but have zero sense of direction and would be lost before leaving the airport without satnav.
I’m really good at hunting down great restaurants to eat in, but genuinely have to Google “how long to hard boil an egg” every single time I want one – my culinary ability is near zero.
I love to chair our Leadership Group meetings, but I’m hopeless when members ask questions about logistics, timings, etc.*
Recognising your limitations, and finding ways to compensate for them, enables time to be allocated to stuff you’re really good at.
And it’s those things that, quite often, will make you enough money to pay for the things you can’t do, and most likely wouldn’t enjoy if you learned.
(*Which is why we have a brilliant team led by Danni to manage all our member meetings, etc. If you’d like to experience how well organised they are, as well as the significant benefits to business leaders, then we have a few spaces available in March.
