Birthdays.
It was my birthday last week, and I went away to Malta for the weekend with friends who were also celebrating.
Although you can sort of expect it, it’s still somehow a lovely surprise to receive messages on “your day” and I was very touched.
Significantly it wasn’t just family and friends though.
Hotel du Chocolat sent me a £5 voucher.
Virgin Atlantic credited my account with 2,000 miles.
The Dom Perignon team wished me a “radiant birthday”, and in a similar vein, Chandon Garden Spritz said “we hope you have the best day filled with cheers and joy”.
Perhaps best of all, Wrexham AFC wished me “Penblwydd Hapus” and highlighted all the current and past players to have birthdays in October (including co-Chairman Ryan Reynolds!)
Now I know that all of these and many more organisations have an automated process to send birthday greetings. It’s not as if someone is sitting in an office going “I must remember Peter’s birthday”.
But here’s the thing, despite it being automated, and with no human involved, it still made me feel good and endeared me to them all to some degree, (most of all Wrexham!).
