Julian’s 3.
I had lunch last week with some old mates, two guys I’ve known for 30+ years.
They’re both very successful in the entertainment/showbiz/events industry, and I asked one of them (Julian), what are the main three things that have led to his success.
His response was immediate, and they really connected with me, as I hope they will with you too.
1. Hard work.
Although he founded his business over 40 years ago, Julian still works as hard as ever. His belief is “either work hard or get out” – my interpretation is that no company can afford to have anyone on cruise control.
2. Face to face
Julian’s repertoire of stories is incredible – after all he’s produced hundreds of parties for royalty, and the rich and famous with budgets often running to several million pounds for one night – but nearly every one of them is prefaced with: “I got a call from (insert famous name), who asked if I could design their wedding, birthday, significant event, party; so I jumped on a plane to Las Vegas/Dubai/South of France to go and discuss it with them….”. He always goes to see the client in person, wherever in the world they happen to be – “You get so much more from meeting face to face” he explains, and I agree. Zoom, Teams and the telephone all have their place, but for the really important times, there’s nothing like sitting down together.
3. Trust yourself
“I always start from the position of ‘Yes, it can be done’; and there’s always a way, and I trust myself that I’ll find the solution.” He explained how this mindset enabled him to win his first event, and that with each subsequent success it’s added to his self belief. That’s not to say he hasn’t had problems, or that mistakes haven’t been made, but by working hard, and having won trust via meeting in person, the issues can always be overcome.
