3C Leadership.
Jane Fraser is an inspiration to many people, and should be to many more.
Hailing from St Andrews Scotland, and graduating from both Cambridge and Harvard, today she’s the first female CEO of a major US bank (Citigroup), whose global network enables the movement of the equivalent of Germany’s GDP each day across borders, currencies and asset classes. In addition, under Jane’s leadership, the bank has committed to invest over $1trillion to ESG.
What I often find with incredible leaders of complex businesses is how they have the ability to distill their approach down to a few simple fundamentals – as with Jane’s 3 C’s of Leadership.
Context – “You have to provide a vision for people, a sense of purpose, and setting the stage so they know what they should be doing and some of the decisions they should be making, how they should be innovating.”
Curiosity – “If you’re not asking lots of questions, and you’re not really engaging with people and you’re not curious about the world, I think you miss a lot of different things.”
Courage – “Because there are some tough calls, and at the end of the day, the buck stops with you and you’re the one that has to make them.”
My sense is that many leaders are generally better these days at providing ‘Context’ i.e. the Purpose, Objective, Strategy and Tactics (POST) of their organisation, but are not nearly curious enough and worse, lack courage to face the often brutal reality and deal with the big issues.
