Another budget.
How you feel about your business is broadly down to two things: your results and how they compare to your budget (ie expectation).
In no small part thanks to the doomsayers, and their extremely negative predictions, many people started the year with low expectations and consequently are feeling quite chipper as to how things are going after the first 6% of the year.
Of course, had the economic mystic megs predicted boom conditions, then even with the same results so far, the mood and confidence would be much lower.
You see it’s not just the results that affect confidence and outlook, no, a far greater factor is the expectation, what you budgeted for. And it’s this I’m urging you to have another look at.
As many of you will have set your budget in the last few weeks of the year, can I suggest you look at it again through a different (more positive) lens?
I’m concerned that some of you might have set targets that are too low, not challenging enough.
You might have decided not to invest in new initiatives, or even to cut back on essentials such as infrastructure, marketing and people development.
Of course, there’s 94% of the year to go – and even with my very full glass, I’m not pretending there aren’t challenges to be faced.
But what if you and your team have set off on too easy a journey? It’s not too late to correct the course now with another budget.
