Four i 461 Sales

The words of Jeff Faulkner, my MD at Barratt when I was promoted to Sales Director, still haunt me:

“Peter, remember though, Sales is too important to leave to the Sales Director.”

I was crestfallen. Having just secured my dream role, I was knocked back and felt empty – but now I realise he was right.

Everyone is in Sales.

The Finance Director is in Sales. So too, the Head of Marketing, IT, Operations, Facilities, Product, People – whatever your role and area of specialism, it should have “& Sales” added to the title.

That’s because Sales is rarely, if ever, confined to one moment.
The product sells.
The marketing sells.
The customer service sells.
The contract, terms, and cash collection sells.
Everything sells.

If you’re ever below your sales target, (and having checked it was a sensible one), then look beyond the sales team.
Ask, “What is every department and every individual doing to assist sales?”

In the four decades since Jeff gave me a harsh, but invaluable lesson, I’ve seen the best company performances always come about when everyone is aligned with sales.
