I’m extremely fortunate to have been coached by, and to have learned directly from, some incredible people, and right at the top of the list is Stephen R Covey, (author of ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People‘).
On two separate occasions, I spent a morning with Stephen and had the opportunity to dive deeper into his material than either the three day participant or ten day trainer courses allowed.
He said many things that I’ve quoted on numerous occasions, but one came back to me this morning, and it’s typically brilliant, yet simple.
“You don’t have to ask people to give their energy, if first you gain their interest.”
All too often, leaders believe they can motivate people with financial incentives, when in fact, mostly, these only deliver short term results.
On the other hand, if people are persuaded by the cause, purpose or reason they’ll give you their discretionary effort, over and again, not just when it’s bonus time.
