Coming of age.

fouri 397 Coming of Age

I hit a milestone birthday tomorrow. Of course, age is just a number but nonetheless, the significant dates: 13, 18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 60, etc., tend to herald a new chapter.

And as my next one is about to start, I’ve scored myself against three key criteria to identify opportunities for improvement.

By the way, you don’t need to wait for your next big birthday, you can consider these aspects of life at any time.

1. Be the best that you can be.

This is all about self fulfillment. In simple terms, as Josh Phegan once said to me, “make sure your dreams are always bigger than your memories.”

2. Have loving relationships.

I could have drawn the line at likable or enjoyable relationships, but that’s too easy. The pursuit of loving relationships, in my experience, begins with seeking that outcome – rather than trust being earned, give it and more often than not, it will be returned.

3. Make a meaningful contribution.

As one gets older, it becomes increasingly important to leave a legacy, to depart having made a positive contribution. This can be on a local, national or global stage – very few people are ever remembered a century on from their departure, but their lessons and contributions might be.

The first addresses the human need to fulfil potential. The second, the human need to be social and belong to a group. The third, the human need to transcend personal and familial relationships to a greater height, to do something meaningful.

I know I’ve got lots of opportunities to improve in all three dimensions – and if your next significant birthday cake has fewer candles than mine, then you have even more.
