You’re a Rockstar!
I’ve been called many things over the years, but “Rockstar” is a new one, (and yes of course I like it!)
This moniker has been bestowed by Myzone – the fitness tracking company – and is the latest rung on their ladder which started with Iron, and then led to Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Hall of Fame, and now Rockstar. It doesn’t end there either – if I hit my monthly target each and every month for another year, then in 12 months I will become “Superstar!”
On the one hand it’s a bit silly, actually you might say very silly. But on the other hand, it’s clever.
That’s because it utilises the “Commitment & Consistency” principle as identified by Professor Robert Cialdini in his book ‘Influence: Science & Practice’. You see, having taken 6 years to get to this point, I’m reluctant to fall down the ladder, (which happens if you miss just one month’s goal), indeed, this has kept me on track for several years now and given it’s measuring (and you could say rewarding) something positive, i.e. keeping fit, then I’ll stick with it.
So other than showing off a bit, why am I sharing this new status with you?
Well it’s because I feel many businesses would do well to consider doing something similar, indeed my old company, Jackson Property Services (JPS) utilised it to great effect.
At JPS, the entry level was Trainee Negotiator. After a probation period, the next rung was Negotiator. Then there were 11 further steps:
Senior Negotiator
Valuer
Senior Valuer
Assistant Branch Manager
Branch Manager
Senior Branch Manager
Branch Director
Senior Branch Director
Area Director
Regional Director
Managing Director.
Each promotion required a combination of achieving pre agreed targets, and also living the company values with associated behaviours – and at each step up there were additional benefits, including increased basic salary, higher commission threshold, better company car, extra holidays, and things like pension, healthcare, and life insurance.
It contributed to positive competition, enhanced retention, and most of all allowed us to create a true meritocracy.
And I bet we all want that.
