We’re aware that most artists sign their paintings.
Authors often have book signings.
We might have heard about the Rolls Royce engineers who used to sign each engine they built.
But for the most part, work is largely completed anonymously. Which is a shame.
We live in an old house. The original structure was built in 1348 and the modern extension in 1450.
Over the years there’s been many additions, and alterations, not to mention countless repairs.
Right now, we’re halfway through the renovation of the chimneys, and this is causing some of the roof to be overhauled as well.
Last week, one of the builders presented us with this tile that he had carefully removed when he saw what was written on it:
“This roof was reslated by Walter Williams, Abermorddu, November 1890”
It was also signed by the agent and the tenant.
I feel the sense of pride the three of them must have felt 134 years ago, as they took responsibility for the maintenance and protection of a lovely old building.
